Programs

FHI supported Brazil in reducing HIV and STI transmission and improving HIV/AIDS care and support mainly among many target groups.
FHI worked with the National AIDS Control Program (NACP) of Brazil and a consortium of partner agencies to strengthen the management and technical capacity of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) throughout the country to provide effective HIV and STI prevention services.

Through the FHI IMPACT Project, we worked with the NACP to:

  • Monitor and evaluate programs
  • Improve HIV/AIDS counseling
  • Disseminate best practices to support HIV interventions

We also provided technical assistance in strategic planning and conducted training workshops in technical areas that were deemed critical for HIV/AIDS/STI programs. Our efforts helped to:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate HIV/AIDS/STI projects
  • Provide harm reduction for injection drug users (IDUs)
  • Supervise and monitor HIV prevention activities
  • Offer counseling and testing
  • Market condoms

HIV Prevention Trials Network

As the Coordinating and Operations Center (CORE) of the HIV Prevention Trials Network, FHI worked with U.S.-based researchers and the HIV Prevention Trials Unit (HPTU) in Brazil. The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) is collaborating with the HPTU in Brazil to develop and implement clinical trials and related studies of HIV prevention interventions as part of the HPTN research agenda.

FHI Programs

Our first HIV/AIDS prevention projects in Brazil began in 1988 as part of FHI's AIDSTECH project. From 1993 to 1998, our AIDSCAP project supported a comprehensive HIV prevention program in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where about two-thirds of the country's HIV infections are concentrated.

The program included a highly successful condom marketing program, training in STI case management, behavioral research, and behavior change communication (BCC) programs aimed at key populations whose behavior put them at risk for HIV infection.

Through our HIVNET project, we conducted an AIDS vaccine clinical trial. We also developed and pilot-tested a technical capacity assessment tool known as FACT (Ferramenta de Auto-avaliacão de Capacidade Técnica) and studied the baseline indicators for sustaining HIV prevention programs.
