Since 1998 FHI has been addressing HIV/AIDS issues in China, and established an office in Beijing in October 2003. FHI/China is collaborating with local partners to increase the demand and availability of HIV/AIDS prevention and care services, especially for high-risk groups.

As part of the USAID-funded IMPACT Project, FHI focuses on developing locally appropriate responses that minimize the impact of HIV in the southern border provinces. To ensure sustainability, FHI develops the capacity of local organizations and their ability to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

We work closely with the government to improve the monitoring of the epidemic and to improve the public health policies related to HIV/AIDS. FHI is also involved in providing technical support and consulting services for the World Bank's Health IX project.

In 2000, FHI established an HIV/AIDS Resource Center with support from the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID). The center facilitates cooperation among local and international partners and promotes innovative best practices with trainings, workshops and technical assistance. It encourages creative solutions, and many international experts have come to the center to share their knowledge. The center also evaluates care and treatment pilot projects targeting high-risk populations and seeks way to replicate successful activities in other regions.

According to Dr. Cheng Feng, director of FHI/China, "China is in a unique position to affect the future direction of the AIDS epidemic. The government is taking important steps, but still, we all must do more to prevent people most at risk from becoming HIV-positive, treat those who are infected and educate the general public about HIV/AIDS."

FHI coordinates closely with the Ministry of Health, the National Center for AIDS Prevention and Control, provincial AIDS groups and many local and international organizations. We are committed to working with our partners in the critical fight against HIV/AIDS.
