Objective: to identify and build the institutional and programmatic capacity of an Egyptian NGO to provide a comprehensive package of HIV/AIDS care and services for key populations at particular risk of HIV infection.
Activities:
- establishing a comprehensive care center offering HIV/AIDS prevention and care messages, peer education, individual and group counseling, anonymous voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV, basic medical care, and needs-based referrals
- conducting prevention activities among injecting drug users (IDUs) as a safe entry point for other key populations vulnerable to HIV
- facilitating the early detection and treatment of HIV/AIDS by coupling street-based outreach for IDUs with VCT for HIV
- establishing strong referral linkages among service partners and providing timely information on where to seek services to maximize care and support resources and ensure a continuum of care
- ensuring that Befrienders has the technical and management capacity to sustain the project when external support ends
Achievements:
The comprehensive care center (CCC) was launched in July 2008 and is now operating at full capacity. Other program achievements include:
- tailored training provided to relevant staff in areas including outreach, VCT, syndromic management of STIs, infection control and rapid test for HIV, and clinical and home-based care
- CCC site furnished and equipped
- monitoring and evaluation forms developed, including intake forms for MARPs contacted during outreach activities and those accessing the site, as well as VCT, STI, home-based care, and medical forms
- electronic database developed, and two staff members trained in data entry methods
