FHI-Supported Demonstration Projects Focus on Vulnerable Children and Youth

FHI Leads Consortium Offering Family-focused Approach to Helping Children Affected by HIV/AIDS in India

girl beneficiaryJUNE 2008 — FHI is leading a pioneering five-year, US$14 million project to support children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Andhra Pradesh, India. The Balasahyoga program ("active support to the child" in Hindi) is expanding comprehensive, integrated HIV care, support and treatment services in all of the state's 23 districts. AIDS Awareness Event Attracts Thousands, Promotes HIV Prevention

Bollywood star Mandira Bedi hosting the Aastha Atmawishvas event.MARCH 2007 – In the largest such event in India, an estimated 15,000 sex workers attended a ceremony in Mumbai Jan. 10 honoring their commitment to HIV prevention. The event featured Indian movie stars, singers, former "Indian Idol" winners and U.S. actor Richard Gere. Gere, who presented awards to sex workers, led the audience in a chant of "No condom, no sex. No condom, no sex."

Health Worker Mobilizes Indian Community to Seek Treatment and Support

 Pediatric AIDS Initiative Launched

DECEMBER 2006 — Former U.S. President Bill Clinton helped launch India's first pediatric AIDS initiative at a ceremony Nov. 30. The Clinton Foundation will provide children with life-long ART, nutrition supplements and psychosocial support. Five children referred by Women's Action Group CHELSEA (a NGOsupported by USAID through FHI that provides care and support to 450 orphans and vulnerable children in Delhi) are among the first of 10,000 youngsters expected to benefit.

FHI-Supported Projects Recognized on World AIDS Day

DECEMBER 2006 — The National AIDS Control Organization and UNAIDS presented 39 NGOs in India with the Civil Society Award for their innovative work in HIV prevention, care and support. The recipients included four projects supported by USAID through FHI.

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush Visits HIV/AIDS Project Sites

MARCH 2006 — U.S. First Lady Laura Bush visited two HIV/AIDS prevention and care sites in Andhra Pradesh this month. The sites are operated by NGOs Nrityanjali Academy and Freedom Foundation through a USAID-funded and FHI-supported initiative.
