Changing the Way We Change Behaviors

Comprehensive Training in Behavior Change for Outreach Workers

MAY 2008 — Changing high-risk behaviors related to commercial sex is central to containing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indonesia. So FHI/Indonesia is developing a comprehensive training program for outreach staff of over 65 partner NGOs, with the goal of improving their knowledge and skills associated with effective behavior change, with a special focus on increasing the use of safer sexual practices and promoting health-seeking behaviors related to HIV/AIDS.

FHI/Indonesia is working with local and international training experts to develop a comprehensive curriculum and materials. Two modules created address basic HIV/AIDS information, behavior change theory and practice, and standard operating procedures for selected behavior change interventions. Their contents are outlined below.

Each training package covers classroom and mentored fieldwork activities and emphasize practical skills needed to change high-risk behaviors. If time and resources allow, a third module is envisioned. It will be directed mainly to NGO field supervisors and program managers and used to hone the management skills required to support the implementation of effective behavior change interventions.

A significant number of qualified trainers are required for the program, so FHI/Indonesia contracted Inspirit, a local organization, to improve the facilitation skills of a group of master trainers who comprise national and provincial FHI staff and professionals from partner implementing agencies and local government sectors.

The goal is to establish a team of trainers in each of eight target provinces. The provincial team would be responsible for organizing training for all partner NGOs in the province, and Inspirit and FHI country office staff will provide mentoring. To date, 61 master trainers have been trained, and they have trained 284 outreach workers on the contents of the first module of the program. Training in the second module will begin shortly.
