FHI-Supported Loan Program Empowers Malawian Women

MARCH 2007 — Women who support orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) are benefiting from a program that helps them afford food and other household necessities. The FHI-supported loan program provides income-generating activities for more than 70 widowed OVC guardians. Beneficiaries complete business management training in order to receive loans to establish small-scale businesses.

Malawians Gain Self-Reliance through FHI-supported NGO

Amini AfikiMARCH 2007 — The Namwera AIDS Coordinating Committee (NACC) partners with FHI in Malawi to provide care and support to home-based care clients and OVC and their families. NACC has trained 163 people in vocations, 85 of them in tinsmithing. NACC also teaches marketing and business management, and refers its vocational students to lending and microfinance institutions and social welfare offices for support when they finish school.

FHI/Malawi Integrates Nutrition into Home-based Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children

Creative Cooking SessionOCTOBER 2006 — For the past year, FHI/Malawi has integrated a nutrition component into home-based care for orphans and vulnerable children. The children receive maize, soya flour, and nuts as nutritional supplements. FHI/Malawi also teaches community members about the importance of a diverse diet and promotes communal gardens, low-input agriculture, and drip-irrigation kits for gardening.

FHI/Malawi Adds Nutrition Activities to Care and Support Services

NOVEMBER 2005 — FHI/Malawi is adding a nutrition and food security component to its home-based care for people with HIV and programs for orphans and vulnerable children. Activities include nutrition training and support for creating communal gardens.

MARCH 2005 — Kaisernetwork.org has profiled an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article that highlights three upcoming clinical trials of the antiretroviral drug Viread.
