
New Study Gives Voice to People Living with HIV
MARCH 2009 — Analysis of the largest survey of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and their children in Namibia was completed last month. The HIV and AIDS Treatment Literacy Follow-up Survey was conducted over two months in late 2008 through the coordinated efforts of five partners and four donors, and yielded findings that were shared at a dissemination workshop in Windhoek early this month.

The Community Faith-Based Regional Initiative for Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children (FABRIC) is a five-year partnership between FHI and three umbrella faith-based organizations in Namibia, South Africa and Zambia. The program is expanding comprehensive care and support services for orphans and other vulnerable children.

HIV and AIDS and Treatment Literacy: Namibia Survey 2008 surveyed healthcare workers, people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV), and children of HIV and AIDS support group members. The study highlights the importance of social support groups and accurate information dissemination for PLHIV and their families.

Book Promotes Low Cost Creative Play for Vulnerable Children
JANUARY 2008 — A new book helps teachers and caregivers engage children in creative play as they make indoor games and handicrafts from commonly found recycled materials. Produced in partnership with Catholic AIDS Action and other organizations in Namibia, It Costs Almost Nothing features 52 projects that can be made from discarded materials, making it possible for even very poor children to benefit. The book is designed for use with children roughly ages 3 to 10.

Community Counsellor Training Toolkit
OCTOBER 2007 — FHI/Namibia has developed a novel, client-centered approach to training community counselors that enables them to focus on the whole person. This means that counselors put HIV infection in the context of clients' lives, rather than isolating their sexual behaviors, risk patterns, or treatment needs.
