FHI Programs in the Philippines

FHI for more than a decade has provided technical assistance to develop the capacity of the Philippines Department of Health, local government units, and partners to respond appropriately and effectively to HIV/AIDS.

FHI Philippines has worked with local partners in the Philippines to enhance the quality, availability, and demand for STI management prevention services.  In particular, FHI:

  • Improved the national STI case management guidelines by conducting a validation study on the Philippine flowcharts using sydromic case management
  • Advocated for local government support to address asymptomatic STIs among high-risk populations through screening and presumptive treatment
  • Developed the National STD Case Management Guidelines
  • Conducted intervention research on health-seeking behaviors for STIs
  • Upgraded social hygiene clinics

FHI has also improved the availability of data and the capacity to generate and apply the data to monitor and evaluate HIV/AIDS/STI prevalence, trends, and program impacts. With our local partners FHI:

  • Established the national STD surveillance system
  • Conducted a baseline study on STIs in Cebu City and Metro Manila
  • Conducted STI prevalence survey among female sex workers and their clients, and men who have sex with men
  • Conducted STI prevalence survey in the general population
  • Conducted a male sexual risk behavior survey

Our earlier work in the Philippines also included:

  • Formative research and interventions with seafarers in General Santos City (1996-1997)
  • Interventions with commercial sex workers in Olongapo, Angeles City, and Manila (1989-1991)
  • Analysis of the condom market (1989-1991)
  • Analysis of the cost-effectiveness of blood banking (1991)
  • Upgrading regional blood centers (1990)
  • Serum pooling for HIV screening
