FHI in 2002 was awarded a five-year, $35 million contract from USAID to assist in overhauling and strengthening the Dominican Republic's national responses to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, reproductive health, and child survival challenges. USAID-Conecta was extended until the end of FY 2008 to continue the USAID supported strategy described below. FHI is the institutional contractor for the project, with its partner, Abt Associates, Inc.
The USAID-CONECTA Project is working to expand successful interventions in the areas of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, reproductive health, immunization, and community water systems within the framework of the Dominican Republic's new social security system, focusing on capacity building within the public health and NGO sectors and supporting the development of best practices for the integration and access to a continuum of related health services. A focus of the project is to promote alliances between public sector and community-based health services as pilot interventions with the goal of establishing national replication models.
CONECTA Project is working at both national and local levels. At the national level, the project is assisting in revising norms and developing protocols for service delivery, as well as working with the government and other donors on policy issues. We are coordinating national campaigns and programs, and supporting medical schools in reforming their curricula to train general practitioners and obstetric specialists. And we are supporting the national social security system in designing and implementing a contingency plan to establish integrated
care services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
CONECTA Project is working in these areas:
-
HIV/AIDS prevention and care
-
Voluntary counseling and testing for HIV
-
STI services
-
DOTS/TAES community outreach for tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment and follow-up
-
Immunization
-
Prenatal and post-natal care and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission
-
Appropriate referrals to hospitals for obstetric care
-
Family planning
-
Integrated health services for adolescents
